Installation Troubleshooting & FAQ

Why should I unzip Cove into ~/Extensions/cove instead of leaving it in Downloads?

When you install an unpacked Manifest V3 extension in Chrome, Brave, Arc, or Edge, the browser loads assets directly from that folder on disk. Extracting Cove into a permanent folder like ~/Extensions/cove ensures your extension stays active even if you clean out your Downloads folder.

Chrome shows a 'Disable developer mode extensions' banner on startup—is Cove safe?

Yes. Chrome shows that notice for any extension loaded directly from disk outside the Chrome Web Store. Because Cove is open-source (Apache 2.0) with strict CSP (script-src 'self') and zero obfuscated code, loading unpacked lets you inspect every file in unpacked-chrome-mv3/.

How do I install Cove permanently in Firefox or Zen Browser?

Standard Firefox loads unsigned zips for the current browser session via about:debugging#/runtime/this-firefox. For permanent installation without signing prompts, use Firefox Developer Edition, Firefox Nightly, or Zen Browser (with xpinstall.signatures.required set to false in about:config) and install cove-firefox-mv3-v0.1.3.zip via about:addons. Firefox desktop 140+ and Firefox for Android 142+ are supported.

How do I back up or migrate my Cove settings, bookmarks, and RSS feeds to another computer?

Open Cove Settings (press , or ⌘,), navigate to Backup & Data, and click Export Workspace JSON. On your second machine, install Cove and import that JSON file—all themes, custom RSS feeds, notes, and Cove Smart Engine preferences restore immediately.
